What you keep at 0%

How the 4% shows on a ticket
What one year buys
- Inventory at a 40 percent margin $57,600
- Marketing and loyalty budget $10,368
- Paid staff hours at 18 dollars 1,280 hours
- Family vacations at $4,500 5 trips
Estimates based on the volume and rate you enter. Effective rate is total monthly fees divided by card volume. Actual results depend on card mix and debit share. Both programs run on every Square device.
Why Square
Five systems owners ask about, and where Square comes out ahead.
Square isn’t the right answer for every business, and we’ll say so when it isn’t. We can afford to be straight about it. Here’s the short version of each comparison.
-
Square beats Shopify POS.
Because your counter is not an afterthought to your website.
- Square hardware runs from a pocket reader to a dual-screen register and a self-order kiosk. Shopify sells a reader and a stand.
- Square for Retail and Restaurants are built for in-person operations, staff and inventory first, with online store, invoices and appointments included.
If most of your revenue is online and you run a large catalog with apps, Shopify is a strong platform.
-
Square beats Clover.
Because your price shouldn’t depend on which reseller signed you.
- Square publishes one price and one processing rate. Clover pricing varies by reseller, contract and app bundle.
- 0% processing is native on Square’s own screen, not a bolt-on from a third-party app.
If your business needs a specific Clover app or a Fiserv relationship, we’ll tell you.
-
Square beats Lightspeed.
Because you should be live in days, not weeks, and run it yourself.
- Square sets up in an afternoon with no implementation fee.
- Square for Retail covers barcode inventory, purchase orders and vendors at $49 a month, on one account with restaurant and online.
Lightspeed goes deeper on matrix inventory for very large multi-store retailers.
-
Square beats Heartland.
Because a statement you can’t read isn’t a good deal.
- Square is one flat rate, or 0% on the 4% program. Interchange-plus statements are hard for most owners to audit.
- Hardware and software come from one company, and there’s no early-termination fee on Square.
Very high-volume merchants with a clean card mix can sometimes win on interchange plus. Bring us the statement and we’ll do the math.
-
Square beats QuickBooks POS.
Because your point of sale shouldn’t be discontinued.
- QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale was discontinued in 2023. Square is a current, supported lineup.
- Square syncs sales, fees and payouts to QuickBooks Online, so the books stay where you keep them.
If you’re still on QuickBooks POS, the question is where to move, not whether.
Free $0, Plus $49, Premium $149, or 4% cash discount
Per-location software plans at Square’s published prices, or the 4% cash discount through our partnership to offset processing. Hardware is separate. We’ll tell you which path matches your volume.

How we work
- Set up with you, not for youYour items, menu or services loaded, your devices paired, and your staff walked through checkout before the first customer. You open ready.
- A statement read before you switchBring what you pay today. We show you the real effective rate, what Square costs on the plan that fits, and whether the move comes out ahead.
- The right plan, not the biggest oneFree, Plus or Premium, matched to how many staff and locations you run. Most shops start on Free and move up when the numbers say so.
- A human when it mattersSquare’s help center and chat are good. When the register is down on a Saturday, you call someone who already knows your setup.
- Still here next yearNew location, new device, a second menu, volume heading toward custom pricing. The same person helps you grow the setup.
FAQ
Questions, answered simply.
What does 2.6% or lower actually mean?
2.6% + 15¢ is Square’s in-person rate on Square Free, the $0 plan. It drops to 2.5% + 15¢ on Plus ($49 a month per location) and 2.4% + 15¢ on Premium ($149 a month per location). Every major card costs the same.
Is 2.6% really the lowest flat rate?
For a published flat rate with no monthly fee, no contract and no statement fees, yes. Plenty of processors quote a lower headline number and then add monthly minimums, PCI fees, batch fees and tiered surcharges, so effective rates of 3.5% and up are common. With Square, the rate you see is the rate you pay.
Can I pay nothing to process instead?
Yes. On any Square plan you can run 0% processing with a cash discount or a service charge: the ticket covers the fee and you keep the whole sale. You can start on the flat rate and switch later, or the other way round.
What if I process a lot?
Above $250,000 a year you may qualify for Square Pro custom pricing and processing fees. We open that conversation with Square for you.
Why sign up through Royal Capital Payments instead of Square directly?
You get the same Square account, hardware and published prices either way. Going through us adds a person: help choosing the right setup, your catalog and devices set up with you, and someone who already knows your business when something needs attention.
Does it cost more to go through a partner?
No. You pay Square’s published plan prices and rates. There is no partner fee on your statement.
Will I talk to a person or a bot?
A person. Square offers a help center, an automated assistant and live chat on every plan, plus phone support that depends on the plan: weekdays for your first 90 days on Free, weekdays on Plus, and 24/7 on Premium. We sit on top of that as your local contact who already knows your setup.
Who owns my account?
You do, on Square. Square holds the account, runs the payments and pays you out. We never touch your funds.
Does Square work for full-service and quick-service restaurants?
Yes. Square for Restaurants handles floor plans, coursing, seat numbers, split checks, pre-authorized bar tabs and automatic gratuity. Servers take orders and payment at the table on Square Handheld, a kitchen display routes tickets to the line, and Square Kiosk adds self-ordering.
Can Square handle my retail inventory?
Square for Retail builds your catalog by scanning barcodes, tracks stock by location, sends low-stock alerts, manages vendors and purchase orders, and prints labels. The same item library runs your online store, so you sell the last one only once.
Grocery and liquor: scales, EBT, bottle deposits and ID checks?
Square supports integrated scales and weighted barcodes, adds bottle deposits automatically per item, accepts EBT for SNAP-eligible items, and prompts staff to verify age on beer, wine, spirits and tobacco.
Barbers, salons and studios: booking, deposits and no-shows?
Square Appointments gives every chair its own calendar, a 24/7 booking site, a Book Now button for Instagram and Google, automatic text and email reminders, deposits, and a card on file for late cancellations and no-shows. Tattoo studios can also send consent forms for e-signature and charge the balance on the day.
I’m under contract with another processor. Can I still switch?
Usually. Send us the agreement and a recent statement. We check the early-termination terms, work out whether switching still comes out ahead, and time the move so you pay as little of any cancellation fee as possible.
How fast can I be up and running?
Most sellers sign up in minutes and can take a first payment the same day with Tap to Pay on a phone. Hardware ships in a few days, and we help load your items and set up the devices when it arrives.
What if the internet goes down?
Square keeps taking cards in offline mode and processes them when you reconnect, as long as that happens within 24 hours.
When do I get paid?
Next business day to your bank at no cost, or instantly for a fee. With Square Checking, sales are available right after each payment.
